Additional Resources Directory

Our list of useful additional resources includes Pitt laboratory research resources, the Health Sciences Library System, using UPMC electronic medical record data for research, and more.

Informatics Resources

Department of Biomedical Informatics

Biomedical informatics is the interdisciplinary field that studies and pursues the effective uses of biomedical data, information, and knowledge for scientific inquiry, problem solving and decision making, motivated by efforts to improve human health. The Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) is committed to improving biomedical research and clinical care through innovative applications of informatics.

Health Record Research Request (R3)

Health Record Research Request (R3) provides UPMC clinical data and authorizes additional UPMC data sources for research. R3 is available for use by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and for UPMC projects requiring research datasets from UPMC electronic health records.

CTSI's Regulatory Knowledge and Support Core can assist researchers using R3 with their IRB submission, including requests for limited data sets, data use agreements between institutions, and other aspects of regulatory compliance.

Library Resources

The Health Sciences Library System (HSLS)

The Health Sciences Library System (HSLS) at the University of Pittsburgh offers a wide array of information services, educational opportunities, and resources in print and electronic format to faculty, students, and researchers in the schools of the health sciences (medicine, dental medicine, pharmacy, nursing, health and rehabilitation sciences, and public health). Services include, but are not limited to courses, individualized consultations, advanced literature searches, access to e-journals and books, and research support.

Laboratory Resources

Health Sciences Core Research Facilities (HSCRF)

The Health Sciences Core Research Facilities (HSCRF) were established through the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor, Health Sciences in recognition of the vital role that centralized research resources play in the academic research enterprise. The technology required to perform innovative biomedical research changes rapidly and centralized research resources provide access to expertise, technology applications, and state-of-the-art instruments to support scientific discovery.

Data Security Resources

UPMC Data Security Policies for Protected Health Information (PHI)

UPMC IT support:
Call the UPMC Information Services Division Help Desk at 412-647-HELP (4357).

University of Pittsburgh Social Security Number Policies

Human Research Protection Office (HRPO) Guidance

Information and resources on a variety of topics, including Data Safety Monitoring.

Participant Compensation Resources

Vincent

The system used to pay research subjects for their participation in a research study.

Advisory Board Resources

Community Research Advisory Board

The Community Research Advisory Board (CRAB) advises researchers on how best to engage under-represented populations in research and to foster collaboration among those populations and researchers interested in addressing health disparities.

Youth Research Advisory Board

The Youth Research Advisory Board (YRAB) is a diverse group of teens and young adults ages 15-26 who meet monthly to offer a youth perspective to interested researchers and community partners about adolescent research.

Other Resources

Comparative Effectiveness and Patient-Centered Outcomes (CERC)

CERC leads and participates in high-quality clinical and methodological research, collaborates on educational activities, and fosters multi-disciplinary projects and interaction among patients, researchers, and other stakeholders.
